Jalapa (hä-lä'pä) is the capital city of the state of Vera Cruz (sic). It is sevently miles by rail northwest of Vera Cruz (sic) city and has a population of nearly 25,000 in habitants. It is a beautiful little city, picturesquely situated on the slopes of the sierra, or mountain range which separates the great central plateau from the tierra caliente (low warm country) or the Gulf Coast. The altitude of the city is 4,300 fett, with the Cofre of Perote rising behind the city to the height of 13,419 feet. Its altitude, and its nearness to the higher mountains such as Cofre de Perote in Orizaba, combine to make the climate of Jalapa cool, healthy, and delightful by the wealthier residents of Vera Cruz (sic), who come into the higher country to escape the heat and malaria of the coast region. Jalapa contains many well constructed buildings, many of them in the Old Spanish style. Of its public buildings probably the most interesting are: a fine old church which attracts the attention or visitors because of its beauty ; a convent of the Franciscan Order which dates back to the times of Cortes; and three hospitals, one of which, the Hospital of San Juan de Dios; was founded in the colonial period. The neighboring valleys and slopes are fertile and productive, and in the forests a plant called Jalap is found, which is shipped in large quantities for medicinal purposes.
