It is valued fot the stringy fibres of its leaves, which are extracted with the aid of special machinery and used to manufacture bags, mats, and cordage. The lower leaves of the plant are cut off as they become full grown to extract the fibre from them, and the plant keeps on producing new leaves at the top, until it send un finally from its center a tall stalk which carries the flowers. After blooming it dies and has to be replaced. The plants seen in this view are very old ones and will not live much longer. The younger plants look like the top tuft of leaves of these, with the long stalk omitted. Yucatan is a dry stony country, and was considered nearly worthless for agriculture until it was found that the henequen agave could be raised on a large scale to advantage. The country is now covered with henequen plantations and the fibre is the only important article of export. Yucatan owes its present wealth and progress to this plant. In the view are also seen the thatched huts of some of the workers on this plantation of San Jose; in all, fully 500 people work here. In the extreme background are seen the plantation house and the tall smoke-stack of the fibre extracting plant. The living houses of the Yucatan plantations are usually not occupied by their owners, who live in Merida, the capital city, and have hired overseers to look after the plantations. copyright 1908, by Keystone View Company."
