- This was the capital of the Zapotec state, founded in a mountainous area where the three central valleys of Oaxaca come together in about 500 BC. Its fall is dated to between 800 and 850 AD. During its period of greatest growth, it housed a population of approximately 25,000 inhabitants. Monte Albán’s entire urban infrastructure of temples, palaces, plazas, rainwater harvesting systems, pathways, and defensive systems was adapted to the mountain, thus creating a unique cultural landscape. This site was therefore added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1987, along with the Historic Center of the City of Oaxaca, due to its testimony to the historical development of the peoples in the south of our country.
