What more suitaBle spot could be chosen for a monument to soldiers than the place where they bravely opposed an invading army in the defense of their capital city? The monument shown in our view is to commemorate the noble, though unavailing efforts, of the Mexican soldiers to repulse the United States troops who stormed the Castle of Chapultepc on the morning of Semptember 13, 1847, ending the Mexican War by taking the key to Mexico's capital. This monumento stands in a beautiful garden at the eastern base of the great mass of rock rises to the height of 200 feet out of magnificent cypress groves, and uppon its summit the great Castle of Chapultepec is perched. The Castle contains the National Military Academy, "the Mexican West Point", and the summer palace of the Mexican President. In the defense of Chapultepec against the American troops in 1847, cadets from the National Military Academy played a gallant part, and many of them were slain when it was stormed by the American Army. Chapultepec is situated at the southwest end of the Pasea (sic) de la Reforma, the splendid avenue which runs out from the Avenida Juárez in the city of México, for nearly three miles to the rugged fortress, perched high upon its cypress-girdled rock. This wonderful highway is lined with stone walks and a double row of tress, and at intervals there are circular spaces 300 feet in diameter called "glorietas" ornamented with statues and flowers. Es un obelisco pequeño con los nombres de los seis Cadetes fallecidos así como de los Cadetes que fueron heridos o hechos presos en la batalla. Este monumento está justo al pie del cerro, al lado del sitio donde se encontró el cuerpo muerto del Cadete Juan Escutia, quien supuestamente tendría la bandera mexicana, cosa que no se ha demostrado.
