The harbor is safe, and has such deep water that the largest vessels can come up to the wharves to unload and receive their cargo. Every month over four hundred vessels come to Tampico, and it has regular boat connections with New York, Mobile, New Orlands, Galveston, Havana, and many European ports, and all the southern seacoast cities of Mexico. Three million dollars have been spent on a custom house, and a wharf which can accommodate five large steamers at the same time. The harbor is always full of boats. The docks are some distance op the Panuco river, a water way which is large enough for any fleet in the world. The city is on a high bluff which rises fifty feet above the river. Several rivers run into the sea at Tampico. These rivers are navigable by small boats for many miles into the interior. On the Tameso and Panuco river there are over five thousand boats, from twenty to sixty feet long, which bring into the city the products of the country. They carry every sort of tropical fruit and plant, and their cargo often includes earthen ware and other articles of native manufacture. Tampico houses are unlike the houses of the other Mexican cities, but the city is attractive in its own way. The houses have sloping roofs, and wooden verandas in front of each story. They are painted many colors. Many sportsmen come to Tampico, for tarpon fishing, and the name of American millionaries, English and French nobility are on the register of the hotel which is the fishermen's headquarters.
