(7) Cholula was the sacred city of Mexico, the Mecca of the Aztecs. The city had a large population, and sacrifices, processions and festivals made it illustrions, while its social and offician life were compared with the court of Moctezuma at the capital. Cortez (sic) reported to the King of Spain that he had seen 400 temples in Cholula, but no one believes that he saw more than 40; he destroyed them all and required that a Christian church be built on the site of each. He went further, and destruyed 3,000 Cholulans who had assembled in good faith and unarmed to meet him. The present interest of the place is the great Pyramid of Cholula with a base as large as Boston Common, or twice that of Keops; its height is 175 feet; its was built but a vanished race. La cruz atrial que se observa en la imagen corresponde a la Iglesia de los Remedios, construída sobre la Gran Pirámide de Cholula y dedicada desde 1594 a la virgen del mismo nombre. Simboliza la evangelización de los indígenas por los españoles. Desde su atrio se tiene una espectacular vista de los cuatro puntos cardinales, en especial del Valle de Puebla que está hacia el oriente.
