| 520 | |a<p>This paper addresses the role of the mining free-standing companies which operated in the gold fields of Venezuela during two very distant periods: the late nineteenth and late twentieth centuries. It demonstrates that similar conditions like the process of raising capital, misinformed investors and lack of mining expertise of the directors of the companies, contributed to the loss of huge amounts of capital and the failure of the companies to develop productive industrial concerns. The use of a large amounts of primary sources, the specialized mining press and newspapers in general, allows the author to illustrate two speculative processes which may have some resemblance with other countries hosting free-standing companies in the past.</p> |
