- The sites for establishing the Franciscan missions were carefully selected, with the aim of forming five towns that rendered tribute within five years. These were located in places where the missions would have a visual impact and could be seen from far away. Colonel of the Sierra Gorda Don José de Escandón only visited Jalpan and entrusted chieftain Matías de Saldívar with reconnoitering the neighboring regions to reconstruct the other four towns of Tilaco, Landa, Concá, and Tancoyol.
